Garden walk
Huis Bergh Castle is known as one of the largest medieval castles in the Netherlands. Less well known is the fact that the castle grounds also house the oldest documented garden in the country. On this guided tour, you will explore this remarkable estate and discover its rich history.
Thanks to Huis Bergh’s extensive family archives, we know that a garden existed as early as 1461. In 2016, the garden—known as 'De Gaard'—was restored and redesigned, revealing historical features that had previously been hidden from view.
The tour begins in the castle’s outer bailey. From there, your guide will take you across the estate, sharing stories about the development of the garden, the park, and the unique spots surrounding Huis Bergh, bringing the history of the castle and its grounds vividly to life.

The route takes you along the old town ramparts and past the oldest documented garden in the Netherlands. It also includes unique spots such as the old tennis court.
During the walk, you will be introduced to famous residents and historical figures from the town. You will hear, for instance, the compelling story of Mechteld ten Ham, who met her end at the stake here in 1605.

Minting demonstration
Groups can also book a minting demonstration.
For centuries, the rhythm of hammers striking silver and gold echoed through 's-Heerenberg. The coins of Bergh were not merely a means of payment but also a symbol of power and prestige.
Production of coins at Huis Bergh Castle reached its peak in the 16th century. Yet this period also saw controversy: the Bergh mint gained a reputation for producing substandard currency containing insufficient precious metal. Private minting came to a definitive end in 1582.
You can experience this history firsthand in the castle’s keep. Strike your own coin and literally hold the past in your hands. Discover the story. Experience the history. Strike your own coin.
